Hospital Leads Way In Curtain Recycling
A West Midlands Hospital has become one of the first sites in the UK to sign up to a groundbreaking recycling scheme that utilises used cubicle curtains to create new energy.
George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton chose Birmingham-based Opal Disposables to supply disposable curtains as part its ongoing commitment to improved efficiency and lower costs whilst reducing the risk of hospital acquired infections.
George Eliot's Head of Procurement, David Whorwood was pleased to be able to include curtains within the hospital's recycling policy.
"The scheme has made a positive contribution to the efficient day to day running of the hospital. We are also delighted that the used curtains are being recycled using an environmentally-friendly process that actually generates new energy for homes and businesses ".
Opal Disposables - an approved NHS Framework supplier -teamed up with environmental waste specialist Veolia to ensure that all used curtains are disposed of safely and with minimal effect upon the environment. Veolia has developed a number of energy recovery plants - generating power from the recycling process, which is then supplied to the National Grid.
An increasing number of medical facilities are moving over to disposable curtains in order to raise hygiene standards as well as saving labour and laundry costs. The recycling initiative provides hospitals and medical centres with an efficient, sustainable solution that incorporates clinical, as well as non-clinical waste.
Opal's Managing Director, Maurice Laydon praised the hospital for its forward-thinking approach.
"George Eliot has recognised the benefits of recycling and is setting a precedent for other leading facilities across the country. Not only are they doing good work within the hospital, but by adopting a smart approach to waste management they are helping the environment and generating extra power for the UK".
